Pair of Mahogany Side Chairs

Philadelphia, Circa 1760

This assembled pair or side chairs were certainly made in the same shop and it is possible, originated in the same set.  They are virtually identical in every aspect of construction and dimensions with only the most minor variations that are common within any set of chairs of the period.  However similar, they must be considered an “assembled” pair in light of their different histories.  The serpentine crest rail with scrolled ears, cabriole legs terminating in carved trifed feet, stump rear legs and the shaped seat rails all point to an urban Philadelphia shop.   Both the feet and ears are stylistic details that can be related to Irish prototypes and reflect the influence of Irish traditions in Philadelphia (and some Virginia) furniture.

Condition: The chairs survive in fine condition. One chair has a crack where the splat adjoins the crest rail; the stile of the proper right front leg is restored; and the new finish matches that of its mate. The second chair’s surface was restored to match the appearance of the other chair’s fine old surface.
