Walnut Bookcase over Chest of Drawers
Extensive string inlay, contrasting panel doors
Fine old surface
Central Valley of Virginia – Augusta, Rockbridge or Rockingham County Area
Circa 1800

Commentary: This chest with bookcase is a fine example of the Federal style as interpreted by a skilled cabinetmaker working beyond the urban centers of the tidewater. The pleasing proportions and conservative use of decorative inlay in combination with choice grained walnut door panels would have suited the tastes of Virginia clients who preferred the “neat and plain” rendition of the neoclassical taste. The upper case with its restrained cornice contains adjustable shelves and is placed to allow a 10” set back. The lower case consists of four string inlaid and graduated drawers over French feet and a shaped apron. The combination of bookcase and chest of drawers is relatively scarce and seems to have been a regional form. The decorative elements relate to other case pieces with histories in the region including an Augusta County desk illustrated in Southern Furniture, pages 448-450, and a desk/bookcase descended in the Fairfield Family illustrated in Rockbridge County Artists and Artisans, page 105. See also MESDA research file S-6944 for an example of the form attributed to Baltimore, circa 1800.

Condition: The chest is in fine condition with minor repairs to the inlay and other imperfections consistent with age and use. The principal secondary wood is yellow pine.
