“London, Pubd by C&T Stampa & Co, 25 Kirby Strt Hatton Garden, Decr 1, 1804″

H: 15.5″; W: 11.5”

One from a series of images depicting the four continents.  Depicts America as a Greek Goddess with a Liberty pole and cap holding a shield with a eagle and an African American boy dressed in feathers. There is a moose hunting scene in the mountain lake behind.

Prints of the four continents were popular subjects in England between 1790 and 1815, and America was most often depicted as a Plumed Goddess surrounded by the symbols of America’s sovereignty.  The backgrounds were frequently depictions of the wild American landscape – Niagara Falls or a mountain wilderness. The enigmatic boy figure, part slave and part savage, became a curious new American figure depicted in other American engravings such as the Apotheosis of Washington.
