Maker: Signed LR, J. J. Logue 1857
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Commentary: Philadelphia artist John James Logue exhibited regularly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art during the period 1853 – 1858. Based on the Academy’s exhibition records, Logue specialized in still life and portraits. Little further is known about the artist or his career. As American art historian William Gerdts notes in his American Still Life Painting, Logue was an extremely prolific still life painter…but his work has almost disappeared. Given the artist’s distinctive style and the popularity of the “table top” still life, the scarcity of his works today is something of a mystery.
A still life by Logue is in the collection of The Denver Museum of Art and also at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. At least one other has appeared in a modern exhibition; Penn’s Promise (#71) mounted by the Westmoreland Museum of Art in 1988. Works by Logue appear only rarely in galleries or at auction.
Condition: The painting survives in excellent condition and is lined.
