Andrew Melrose was born in Selkirk, Scotland in 1836 and moved permanently to the United States at around the age of twenty. Thought to have been primarily self-taught, he maintained studios in New Jersey but traveled extensively throughout the West and South in the decades following the Civil War. He was a frequent exhibitor at the National Academy of Design. His best-known paintings are views of New York City and harbor and Hudson River landscapes. In his more mature work, Melrose became much more concerned with the rendering of light and atmosphere characteristics associated with the Luminist School and emerging Impressionists.
