Exceptional early surface
This side chair belongs to an identified group of side and arm chairs attributed to Frederick, Maryland. The distinguishing characteristics of the group are the straight crest rail, vase-shaped splat with a half-round bead on the shoulders, through-tenoned seat rails (sometimes wedged), cove molded shoes with a quarter round molding, frequent use of box stretchers and pegged joints. Many of the chairs in the group have histories in 18th century Frederick.
By the end of the Revolutionary War, Frederick had become a vibrant commercial hub for the Potomac River Valley and the town’s mercantile activities influenced life in western Maryland and northern Virginia.
