James Wilson (1763-1855) was the first commercial globe maker in America. Starting out as a Vermont farmer, with assistance from Amos Doolittle and Jedediah Morse, Wilson taught himself to produce all of the elements necessary to construct a globe and by 1810 was manufacturing and selling his products. Around 1815 he moved to Albany NY where he set up a factory with his sons. His competitive pricing and focus on including much detail as possible in depicting American territories brought him much success.
