The strong French influence in this chest can be seen in the sarcophagus top, fluted leg stiles and “bandy” legs. The distinctive legs and feet are seen quite often on Louisiana armoires and tables and are a clear link to the region. The chest is in very good condition with minor repairs commensurate with age and use. There is no evidence that the case ever had dividers for bottles or sugar so it is a matter of conjecture as to its original purpose. As it most closely resembles sugar chests in the southeast and in the Mississippi River Valley, this seems the most likely use. A rare and intriguing form from an area where few early pieces have survived.
