Signed on the top of the barrell – A. McGilray for Alexander McGilvray (1798-   )

This full stock, percussion rifle has a nice old patinia and an intricate brass patchbox characteristic of fine Valley of Virginia craftsmanship. Alexander McGilvray lived and worked in Harrisonburg during the years 1812-1854 where he was “well established and prolific.”  One of the foremost gunsmiths in Harrisonburg and the region, McGilvray’s gunsmith shop
was located on the north side of West Market Street between Court Square and current Liberty Street.
