Step Back Cupboard
Dark Stained Poplar Surface with Pierced and Applied Decorative Elements
Southwestern Virginia, Probably Patrick County
First third of the 19th Century
76″ x 46″ x 18″
This small, one piece cupboard is particularly appealing for several reasons. The surface is a rich old dark brown stain now worn by hand at the door edges with a warm patina. The ambitious carved stars applied to the doors are a creative decorative touch as are the diamond piercing on the cornice returns. The open shelves lend themselves to display and the overall dimensions, relatively small for a cupboard, provide great versatility.
