Turned great chairs with their distinctive series of vertically turned posts supporting robust arms were produced in a long band stretching from the eastern tidewater to the piedmonts along the shared border of Virginia and North Carolina. The backs of earlier iterations were formed by vertical turned, split banisters which evolved into horizontal splats in compensation with the turned arm supports which were eventually eliminated. These chairs reflect the influence of New England chairs and their continental prototypes.
