Commentary: Nancy Evans notes that square-back Windsor chairs probably appeared in the Philadelphia market only a few years before 1800 and quickly replaced the round back patterns that had dominated the design of eighteenth century Windsors. Square-back arm chairs quickly followed with the additional variations of bamboo turned arms either capping or extending beyond the posts. The new styles spread rapidly and were adopted by chair makers throughout the region. The moderate splay of the legs of this chair and the proportions of the turnings seem to relate to a number of chairs from rural areas along the Pennsylvania and Maryland border. The ?stuffed? leather seat is secured by upholstery nails. The chair was found in Baltimore and has a scrawled pencil inscription on the bottom of the seat that begins with the initials W. W. and is then illegible. Below what is presumably the name of the maker or owner are the words Hagerstown, Md.
