This exceptional chest is among the finest Federal era furniture produced in the Valley of Virginia. It clearly shows the stylistic influence of Baltimore and may have been the work of an artisan trained in that city. The construction, especially the drawer framing, places it in a group of chests discussed by Wallace Gusler in his “The Furniture of Winchester, Virginia” published in American Furniture 1997.
