Each Maryland County was required by law to appoint a “keeper of the standards” who was responsible that goods sold were measured accurately by weight, measure, or count. These unit measures were very likely part of a larger set that were used by a merchant or possibly a county official, to verify compliance. (See Mike’s History Blog, Reflections & News About Working With the Past, The Keeper of the Standards: Weights, Measures, and County Oversight in Maryland. Posted on August 30, 2025 by Mike)

Christopher Raborg, located on Water Street in Baltimoret, advertised himself in 1785 as a “Coppersmith and Tinman” with a broad range of products on offer, including stills of various sizes, fish kettles, brewing coppers, scupper leads, etc. In later advertisements, Raborg added that he was also a brass founder, importer and frequently sought out apprentices and journeymen. He was apparently successful in business and an active member of the community. Raborg died at age 70 in 1815, “an old an respected resident” of Baltimore and was succeeded by his son, Christopher Raborg II.
