Maker: Engraved by F[rancis] Lamb and printed by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell
Location: London
Date: 1676
Commentary: This map is the first state of the last (9th) major derivative of the John Smith map of Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay. It was first published in 1676 in John Speed’s posthumous The Theater of the Empire of Great Britain, which appeared only three years after Augustine Hermann’s immensely important and extraordinarily rare map of Maryland. The Speed map contains important information derived from Hermann, most notably the Eastern Shore boundary line between Virginia and Maryland. On the back of the map, Speed printed a condensed version of the descriptions of both Virginia and Maryland first published by John Ogilby in 1671.
Condition: The map is in very good condition with outstanding early hand coloring. It is attractively framed to museum standards.
