The influence of Alexandria stoneware decoration is quite clear in this excellent example of a very rare “John Walker” marked stonewar jar. Walker is recorded in city directories as early as 1834 and as being in the employ of Richard Butt who operated a pottery as well as overseeing the city’s insane asylum. Curiously, Walker also seems to have provided some services as a physician during his residency in the District. By the 1840s Walker had relocated to Ohio and onward to Kentucky. He died in Frankfort in 1883.
