Dated 1837(9)?
16” x 21”
Commentary: Born in Boston, Gerry was largely self taught. He seems to have first worked as a sign painter but eventually focused on landscapes, genre and animal paintings. He traveled to Europe for three years and returned to Boston in 1840 where he set up his studio. Gerry exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, the Pennsylvania Academy and the American Art Union. He traveled frequently to the New Hampshire mountains to paint and is well known for his landscapes of the regions landmarks. Works by Samuel Lancaster Gerry can be found in most major collections of 19th century landscapes.
This is an unusually early painting by Gerry and is revealing of his developing style. It is very likely a view of Mount Washington, possibly from the banks of the Sacco River. The artist made a number of paintings of Mount Washington over his career and this painting closely resembles the perspectives of several later paintings of this famous peak.
Condition: The painting is in excellent condition with little evidence of in painting. The canvas has been lined and placed on a modern stretcher. The leaf frame is not original but is of a period appropriate style.
