The fylfot design seen in the center of the front panel of this chest is a common decorative element on Piedmont North Carolina painted furniture. In this example it is incorporated with six pointed stars, serpentine and weaving line pattern graphics. A Rowan County chest (Figure 41 page 116 June Lucas, “Paint Decorated Furniture from Piedmont North Carolina”, American Furniture 2009,See Below) utilizes a similar star and color palette.
