Pembroke Table
Walnut
Yellow Pine Secondary
Petersburg, Virginia
MESDA Research File S-5074
Circa 1790
Descended in the Gayle Family of Petersburg, Virginia, this distinctive Pembroke table survives with an early surface and its original hardware. The molded but slightly tapered legs and chamfering of the frame rails at both ends point to an early, circa 1790 construction date. This period was the pinnacle of the cabinetmaking era of this town on Virginia’s fall line when its shops produced furniture for homes in the Virginia piedmont and the Roanoke River Valley to the south.
