Portrait of George Washington
Oil on Board
Unknown artist after Gilbert Stuart
Mid-nineteenth century
panel 13.75″ x 17″ – 17.75” x 20.75” Overall with period frame
Stuart himself painted approximately 75 versions of the “Athenaeum” on commission portrait and sometimes jokingly referred to them as his one hundred-dollar bills. A nice example on a poplar (visual) panel in excellent condition.
