Scroll Pediment above Arched Glass Doors
Berks County, Pennsylvania
Circa 1790
H 100″ W 40.5″ D 21″
This is attributed to the Berks County area and reflects a distinctly regional interpretation of the form. It is earlier but closely related to an example in the Philadelphia Museum of Art which exhibits neoclassical influences. The scroll and fan carving, finials and feet are all original. The brasses are period appropriate replacements. The press survives in excellent structural condition with outstanding proportions and presence.
Provenance: Private Collection, Philip Bradley Antiques, Collection of Esther Ludwig, Hamburg PA. The Ludwig Collection was assembled over the 1930s and 1940s and was largely regional in focus and was sold by Freeman’s in 2005 after the death of Ms. Ludwig at nearly 100 years of age.
