Desk and Bookcase
Maple
Providence Rhode Island
Circa 1785
21” deep, 37” wide, 84” tall
This Providence, Rhode Island desk and bookcase crafted of dramatically grained tiger maple features elaborately fitted interiors in both the upper and lower cases. The molded or “waterfall” fronts of the interior desk drawers is unusual but is also found on a number of other Providence desk interiors. Our desk is recorded in Yale University’s Rhode Island Furniture Archive Inventory as catalogue # RIF571, circa 1785-1805. The entry with a photo of the desk and bookcase in a 1964 Magazine Antiques ad allows for its positive identification. Secondary woods are principally chestnut and white pine (visual analysis) and the overall condition is excellent with a rich, mellow color and surface. The brass pulls are original (escutcheons replaced) with the expected minor losses and repairs commensurate with age and use.
