Commentary: George Henry Hall was among the most esteemed and successful American still life painters of the nineteenth century. Hall studied in Europe and traveled the continent extensively. He had a studio in Rome for a period and was particularly influenced by the dark color range and highly polished finishes found on early Venetian paintings.
Condition: The painting is in excellent condition. It was lightly cleaned by conservator Alexandra Tice. The frame is probably original to the painting and was conserved by William Lewin.
