Walnut Tall Case Clock
Eight Day, Brass Works, Painted Iron Face
Shenandoah Valley of Virginia
Unknown Maker ~~ Circa 1800
Fine, Early Case Surface
Commentary: With its bold broken scroll pediment and elongated finials, this tall case clock is characteristic of those produced by Valley shops from Frederick southward into the Augusta County area. This clock has a long history at the Smith Family’s Ripley Farm (c. 1834) in Fauquier County, only a short distance eastward.
Condition: The case and its elements retain a fine old surface that is likely first generation. The rosettes are modern replacements based on witness marks and similar cases. An old improper repair to one of the scroll elements was addressed during conservation by the F.C. Vogt Company, Richmond, VA. The feet are original but show evidence of old repairs. The works were cleaned and put into working order by James Horner of Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia.
