Edwin Frank Bayha, American (1880 – 1937)
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Circa 1912
23” x 36” 32” x 45” Overall
Originally titled “The Tip”, the painting seems to have first appeared as an illustration in the magazine The Judge in 1912 after which it was retitled a “A Current Event”. This painting appeared as the cover illustration on the April 2002 issue of the prestigious Gray’s Sporting Journal and was exhibited at the Morris Museum of Art.
Born in Germany, Bayha emigrated to Philadelphia with his parents where he would live most of his life. He focused early on his artistic talents and would attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts before opening a studio on Walnut Street. Bayha worked principally as an illustrator and produced cover art for Scientific American, illustrations and covers for Harper’s Weekly, and The Ladies Home Journal and a variety of other publications during the first quarter of the 20th century. Very little work by Bayha is known after 1920 until his death in 1937 and it remains something of a mystery as to why so little of this talented artist’s work has come to market.
