Commentary: The breathtaking grandeur of the Horseshoe Falls has been beautifully captured in this landscape painting by Henry Arthur Elkins (1847-1884). Born in Vermont, Elkins settled with his family in Chicago at the age of nine. Primarily self-taught, Elkins took a few lessons from Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), whose influence is strongly at work in this particular painting.
Elkins took the first of what would become many trips to the Rocky Mountains in 1866 accompanied by fellow artists James Gookins (1840-1904) and Henry Chapman Ford (1828-1894); in the 1870s Elkins traveled frequently to California where he painted monumental works of Mount Shasta, Sierra Madre, and other sites. In 1873 Elkins removed from Chicago to Kansas City where he became known throughout the Midwest for his depictions of Coloradoan and Californian landscapes. Elkins exhibited regularly throughout his career and was awarded prizes at the Vienna Exposition in 1873 and the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. Sadly, Elkins’ promising career was cut short when he died at the age of thirty-seven in Georgetown, Colorado.
