Dated Sept 29, 1858
Albemarle County, Virginia
15″ x 21″ Overall – Framed
Woodlands was built c.1842-1843 for Albemarle County planter Richard Woods Wingfield. It was expanded in the 1890s to include a large rear wing with galleries and, except for the addition in the mid-20th century of a portico, the house has changed little during its long history. The graphite on paper view includes great detail of the out buildings, fencing and surrounding pastures. Titled, dated Sept 29, 1858 and initialed by the artist in the lower right corner, this view is a charming and detailed record of a prosperous Virginia farm near the end of the antebellum era.
